Prayer and Worship at Sacred Heart

Deanery mass

Staff from Sacred Heart attended the Barnet deanery mass at Finchley Catholic High. Bishop Sherrington celebrated with the staff of all the Catholic schools in Barnet. It was a fabulous way to start the year remembering our special vocation as Catholic teachers.

Harvest festival

We celebrated the Harvest festival at Sacred Heart. During this season of Care for Creation, we thanked God for nature and the food from the harvest. Our very generous donations of food were delivered to the Chipping Barnet Food bank.

A BIG thank you to all our harvest donations. It was lovely to see our stage filled with food and hygiene products which have now been collected and transferred to Chipping Barnet Foodbank. Our KS1 children learnt about what the Harvest festival is and where the food will go. As a school, it is vital that we can help those in need and give back to our community. A special thank you to our Mini Vinnies who sorted all the items ready for collection.

The Rosary in October

October is a Marian month. In devotion to Mary, We prayed the rosary at Mary’s grotto in the morning before school. It was lovely to have so many families joining us.

Remembrance Day

Remembrance has been our focus during the month of November. Our book of intentions has been completed by pupils and their families and this has been brought to assemblies across November so that we can pray together for the intentions of our school community.

We marked Remembrance day with a 2 minute silence following Mr Gagen, our key stage 2 lead, playing The Last Post on the trumpet.

Advent mass

Father Ben came to school to celebrate mass to mark the beginning of Advent. Father Ben spoke about the Advent themes of hope, peace, joy, and love and how these help us prepare our hearts and minds for the celebration of Christmas. As always it was lovely to have Father Ben playing the piano for the hymns – it greatly enhanced the wonderful prayerful atmosphere of the mass.

Our Minnie Vinnies also attended the Advent mass at Westminster and played a key role in acting at the mass.

Nativity plays

Our Year 2 and Year 4’s have reminded us of the wonder of the Christmas story. These spiritual moments have helped us all to feel ready to celebrate the birth of Jesus.

Year 5 Carol Concert

Our Year 5 led our Carol concert at Mary Magdalen church. Staff, governors and parents attended. Their reading from scripture, tableaus of key moments of the nativity and singing of carols with Father Ben’s accompaniment on the piano created a wonderful spiritual service.

Ash Wednesday

We held Ash Wednesday services at school. Father Ben administered ashes to staff and pupils. He explained the significance of the ashes as a sign of us asking for God’s forgiveness. He spoke about Lent and the three pillars of Lent: Prayer, Fasting and Alms-giving.

Stations of the Cross

Year 6 led our devotion to the Stations of the Cross service for pupils and parents. Through scripture, reflections and beautiful singing, Year 6 offered us all the opportunity to encounter Jesus’ suffering and sacrifice.

Feast of the Sacred Heart

We had a wonderful day to mark this special feast day for our School – The Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The day began with the whole school attending mass at Mary Magdalen church. A large number of parents also attended, Pupils participated in all aspects of the mass: singing, reading, altar serving and leading the offertory procession.

Back at school, we held our customary picnic lunch with all our families gathered together. We completed the day with our usual entertainment of year group dances and whole school songs. This year our theme was Pilgrims of Hope. The songs chosen all had a theme of hope and each year group introduced their performance with what they hoped for in the world. Our final whole school rendition of The Song of Hope filled the playground with joy and was the perfect end to a wonderful afternoon.
