Welcome to Foundation Stage!
In FSA we have Miss Vassiliou and Mrs Murphy. In FSJ we have Mrs Furey, Mrs Scuderi and Mrs Cicco. On Tuesdays we have Mrs Giannotto for P.E (and sometimes for gardening!) and Mr George for Music.
How we learn
The children in Foundation Stage learn through a play based curriculum and our classroom activities change continually.
The EYFS curriculum is split into seven areas of development;
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development
- Physical Development
- Communication and Language
- Expressive Arts and Design
- Understanding the World
In Early Years, we like to ‘hook’ the children into their learning using interesting and exciting topics. The topics that we cover are child initiated – we follow the children’s interests to keep them as engaged as possible.
The class teacher will hear each child once a week on a one to one basis with additional reading happening through adult-led focus groups and guided reading. Your child’s books will be changed twice a week on the days indicated on your reading record. There will be one reading book for your child to read to you and one picture book for you to share together. Please ensure that books are kept in your child’s book bag so we are able to change them when necessary. We ask that every child read as often as possible at home, ideally for a minimum of five minutes each day. We attend the library every Wednesday and your child will be able to borrow a book every week. Please return library books by the following Tuesday.
Home learning may be issued on a Friday, linking to the teaching that has occurred throughout the week. This home learning is an optional ‘extra’ and is not compulsory, but will help to consolidate your child’s learning. Home learning, unless otherwise stated, does not need to be returned to school. In some cases, for larger projects, we may ask that your child’s homework is returned to school and will inform you of this in the homework letter on the website.
Things to remember
Your child should bring their book bag to school every day, even if it isn’t one of their ‘book-changing’ days. We may have handouts for your child, and in FS, holding letters never ends well! Please also remember to give your child a water-bottle each day, but please do not put these in book bags, as our books are very precious to us and we cannot risk a leak! We do have drinking water; however, the lack of a water bottle means your child cannot access water independently when they are thirsty.
The children will begin to attend Rewards Assembly in January.
Please remember to sign up to the school newsletter to ensure you are updated on weekly events in the school.
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask one of the Foundation Stage Team.
